東京藝術大学卒。ロックフェラー3世財団の招きでニューヨークに、又ブリティッシュ・カウンシルのシニア・フェローとしてロンドンに滞在した。又、英国のダーティントン・サマースクールで作曲講師、オランダのガウデアムス国際作曲コンクール等で審査員を務め、更に、ハーバード大学やケルン大学を始め、欧米の多くの大学に招かれて講演を行っている。近年では、米国のイーストマン音楽院の特別客員教授を務めた。国内では、エリザベト音楽大学教授、お茶の水女子大学大学院教授として、そして東京藝術大学でも長年にわたって教鞭をとり、現在は昭和音楽大学教授、お茶の水女子大学名誉教授。日本現代音楽協会理事長。
1970年代末以来、内外の多くの音楽祭にテーマ作曲家として招かれ、様々な主要機関・演奏団体から作曲委嘱を受けている。作品はこれまでに170曲を超え、それらの多くは、国内を始めヨーロッパやアメリカで頻繁に演奏され、CDに録音されている。
1991年尾高賞、2005年中島健蔵音楽賞、2018年芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞を受賞。又2012年には、アメリカ芸術・文学アカデミー外国人名誉会員（終身）に選出された。
文筆も手掛け、主な著書に『線の音楽』『聴く人』『ものがたり西洋音楽史』等、又、訳書も多い。
作品は、ほぼ全作品がイギリスのヨーク大学音楽出版局（UYMP）から、そして一部の作品がペータースから出版されている。
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Tokyo in 1947 and graduated from Tokyo University of Arts in 1972, Jo Kondo spent a year in New York on a scholarship from the John D. Rockefeller III Fund in 1977-78. He has been invited many universities and courses in Europe and USA, and n 1986 resided in London as a British Council Senior Fellow. He is Professor Emeritus of Music at Ochanomizu University in Tokyo, and Professor at Showa University of Music, Kawasaki, Japan.
His works have been widely performed and recorded in Japan, North America and Europe. Kondo has also written extensively on musical matters and has published seven books.
In January 2012 Jo Kondo was made an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. At the ceremony he was hailed as one of Japan’s most distinguished composers and his distinct style of composition was described thus: His music is characterised by a unique personality which synthesizes Japanese aesthetic sensibility and western harmonic structure. Perhaps there are echoes of Morton Feldman, the great American composer, but Kondo’s music inhabits a far larger universe, at once serene and dynamic, at once contemplative and energetic.
